From an enormous railway carriage mounted cannon that the Germans used to shoot Paris, from about 140 km away. Thought to be the biggest cannon ever. Nicknamed the big Bertha. The expression certainly predates the cannon, but afterwards, it referred to the cannon for the French anyway. aVe knows this, for sure.
